New York, New Jersey May Get Its Largest Snowstorm in Years

The National Weather Service is warning of a potential storm heading to the NYC Metro area, on Sunday night. Snow accumulations, strong winds, and low visibility are possible. New Yorkers are advised to exercise caution when driving, walking, or biking, and allow for additional travel time as roads may be slippery.

A winter storm brings accumulating snow Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. Arctic air then settles over the area Sunday night into much of next week because of arctic air conditions.

NYC is expected to receive anywhere from 3 to 5 inches of snow. Rockland County as much as 6.4 inches.

New York City residents should expect 4-6 inches of snow and Long Island residents should expect 2-3 inches of snow. The highest amounts of snowfall will be in the New York City Metro area — with peak snowfall rates of 0.5-1 inch per hour at times — which will result in slippery travel and snow-covered roads Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. The snow may begin as rain or a mix of rain and snow across Eastern Long Island Sunday afternoon. Precipitation in portions of Eastern Long Island may remain primarily rain.

“Frigid temperatures and snow is expected to impact most of the State starting tomorrow, and my Administration stands ready to respond and assist our local partners,” Governor Kathy Hochul said. “New Yorkers are no stranger to winter weather, but I encourage everyone to make sure you and your family are prepared for the snow and extreme cold, exercise caution if traveling and continue to monitor your local forecast.’”

Like NY, the Elizabeth-Newark Area is expecting as much as 5 inches of snow. Lakewood area is expecting 2–6 inches possibly, depending on the storm’s track. This week will also have extremely cold temperatures.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency over Shabbos and stated: “As always, I urge all New Jerseyans to use caution, follow all safety protocols, and remain off the roads unless absolutely necessary.”
